Based on plug-in modules with two wheels you can add an extra extended range battery, gas powered generator, CNG generator, fuel cell or any other new technology that comes out. You can even piggy back two modules together making your car and eight wheeled rig…not sure how safe that is. Businesses can also take advantage of this concept for things like pizza delivery cars with a thermal pizza box, dj outfits complete with a full speaker system. It’s called Dock+go and is only a concept now but hopefully it will catch on.

BMW Plans to Release Electric i3 in 2013

BMW has developed a new electric car prototype called ActiveE. ActiveE has the ability to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a little under ten seconds. Additionally, this new BMW electric car prototype can go around 100 miles in between charges, thanks to its powerful lithium ion batteries. BMW will be showcasing its ActiveE car in South Carolina later this week at the International Electric Vehicle Conference. According to BMW, the electric car technology used in ActiveE will be the basis of their new BMW i3 luxury electric vehicle. BMW plans to release the i3 sometime in late 2013.

The i3 will be a part of BMW’s Project i series of electric vehicles. BMW officially unveiled their concept for the i3 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011. The completion of the ActiveE prototype is the next step in BMW’s process of developing the i3. After the car company performs the necessary tests on the ActiveE and ensures that the car is up to standards, they can officially begin working on what will become the i3. The i3 will be BMW’s first zero emissions vehicle, and it will be one of the first vehicles to be made partially of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic. This carbon-fiber reinforced plastic will allow the i3 to be more energy efficient and consequently last longer between charges.

The i3 is expected to be available for a modest $35,000 when it launches, which means it will likely be an attractive option for many middle class consumers. The i3 will help BMW achieve a fleet fuel economy of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. If everything goes according to plan, the i3 will allow BMW to meet U.S. federal fleet fuel economy regulations. BMW’s electric i3 will have a balancing effect on the total fuel economy of BMW’s cars and will allow the company to continue to produce high-end, luxury vehicles with relatively low fuel economy.

Georgia Tech unveil Solar powered Audi-TT

The world solar challenge in Australia is about to get more sexy with the entry of a solar powered Audi TT courtesy of a team of students at Georgia Tech. The car has 2 separate battery packs one powering the car to a 70 mile range and the other pack powering brakes, windows & steering. EcoMove QBEAK goes for a test drive

The QBEAK by ECOmove goes for a test drive in this video. In size it is very similar a smart car. The design is a novel concept. It has a modular frame layout that will allow for multiple designs, a Hub-motor system (in wheel motor) and an energy module system that can accept up to 6 different modules. The body is made up of light weight recycled composite materials and even has electric sliding doors! The topless feature makes it sexy and appealing making us want it even more. Will it be available in the U.S.? We don’t know yet but if it is we’ll let you know. Check out the video

Delta EV Coupe goes for a test drive

The Delta E4 gets a test drive by the Fully Charged show by Llewellyn and Nick Carpenter. The carbon fiber body E4 has an amazing 250 mile range per charge which is unheard of in today’s production ev’s. Delta a british based company was a competitor in the Automotive X-prize competition. Tesla Sues BBC’s Top Gear

In some comical news Tesla is suing BBC’s Top Gear over an episode called ‘the ultimate test for an electric car’ where a Tesla roadster was pitted against its nearest cousin the lotus elise. In the episode top gear shows the Tesla dramatically slowing down during a speed test and having to be pushed into the garage for charging. Tesla says these scenes were faked and were staged to damage Tesla’s reputation. Is big oil in bed with BBC? Watch Video

Israel gets EV Battery Swap Stations

Israel the place of some of the world’s best innovation is getting it’s first better place battery swap stations. Looking more like a car wash the battery replacement system employs robots to swap out your battery and is completely invisible to the driver. The system currently works on the Renault Fluence and the process requires one swipe of an RFID card and 3 minutes of your time and your back off to your daily errands. Volvo C30 undergoes frigid testing

In order to be a true Volvo it not only must be crash tested but also tested by the elements and what not a better test than taking it up to the arctic circle where temperatures drop down to -30C! In order to endure the sub zero temperatures the Volvo C30 Electric has 3 climate control systems including an ethanol-based heater. This keeps the batteries and it’s occupants cozy warm even in the coldest of weather.

Rolls Royce enters electric era

Gas guzzlers just aren’t cool anymore and to prove it Rolls Royce figured it was about time to see if the old money rich folk agree. Enter the Rolls Royce Phantom Electric 102EX concept car that gets a respectable 120 miles per charge. Gone is the V12 engine and in its place nickel-cobalt-manganese battery packs. The heavy steel frame has been replaced with aluminum to make the load lighter. Although weighting nearly 3 tons it can go 0-60 in less than 8 seconds. >> Watch Video
