When you go electric things seem to get better and better and that’s just what Michelin is doing. Michelin is working with Heuliez and Orange to develop a new concept called ‘active wheel’ electric cars where everything is shoved into the hub of the wheel including the electric motor, electrical suspension system and shock absorber. This system eliminates the need for drive shaft, transmission, differential, exhaust and of course the main engine allowing automobile designers to have much more space to work with and also free up a lot of weight. Look for this technology to hit the public in 2011 at a price range of around $27,000-$34,000 per car.

Although this technology cannot be called new, (it has been around for a long time) its present application to current or future vehicles should be interesting to see.
