LG making progress in Volt battery bid
LG’s chem unit is apparently making progress in the GM Volt battery bid. GM’s Volt is on schedule to be launched on November 2010. LG’s next gen battery is in its 3rd generation and has a liquid cooling system. LG predicts sales of about 1 billion if the contract works out with GM and other electric vehicle manufacturers.
Continental AG which is using technology from A123 Systems is also bidding for the Volt contract. GM wants the battery to last at least 150,000 miles and 10 years. Whoever wins the contract stands to make a lot of money because they will prove to other auto makers they are the dominant battery leader in a new industry that has lots of potential.
